The act of returning a postal item to another address by a post office official or an agent of the addressee after it has been delivered so that it can be received by the addressee.

Items that may be redirected
  • Letters/Postcards/Open printed packets/Newspapers/Parcels/Registered items
  1. A postal item may be redirected without additional charge, but such redirection shall be made only if the item is re-posted by an agent of the addressee on or after the day on which the item was delivered (Sundays and public holidays not included)./
  2. The items to be redirected shall not have been opened or tampered with. The name of the addressee may not be altered in any way. If a label is affixed for a new address, the name of the original addressee should be affixed so that it is not covered. If it is covered, it will be considered as an unpaid item and additional charges will be levied.
  3. If the item is presented for redirection after the above period or is found to have been opened or tampered with before being re-posted, the fee prescribed for the relevant class will be charged for that item as if it were a newly posted item.
  1. Registered items should not be placed in the letter box for redirection. They should be handed over to the office counter. The same registration number on the item will be used for redirection. If the item is presented after the due date, it will be considered as a new item, a new fee will be levied and sent under a new registration number.
  2. Items of a person who has changed to a foreign address will be redirected to him. If the sender has written on the side of the article the address of the article in a language known to the country of destination, it will not be forwarded.
  3. An article will be forwarded from one country to another only if the Postmaster General has determined that it is still in compliance with the regulations.
