Normal Money Order
  • The normal money order service  is used to transfer money using a printed paper document between two destinations in Sri Lanka. This traditional service is very effective because it is available at 652 main post offices and 3354 sub post offices that have been established to cover every 5 km ratio throughout the country.
  • Recipient gets  the printed money order by post

Money transfer limitations

  • Maximum Amount – Rs.100,000/=
  • Maximum amount can be sent at a sub post office   – Rs. 25000.00
  • Minimum amount                                                       – one cent

 


How to send?

The remitter has to fill an application correctly  in Sinhalese, Tamil or English and hand over to the counter officer at the post office or sub post office with the amount intend to send and the certain commission. Next ,he receives a printed money order and he has to post it to the recipient.

How to collect money?

The recipient has to submit the received money order to the post office or the sub post office nominated by the sender and collect the amount after confirming his identity.

Period of validity of a money order

At the end of six months after a money order  was issued, if still unpaid, it is invaluable. If a claim is made within six months of it’s issue ,the amount of the money order can be paid subject to the payment of a second commission equivalent to the commission paid at the time of issue. Claims can be made on exceptional circumstances within the second year of issue, subject to the payment of a commission equivalent to 5 per cent of the face value of the money order.

Claim can’t  be made after two years from the last day of the month of issue.

Liability for wrong payment

After once paying a money order ,by whomever presented ,the postmaster general is not legally liable to any further claim, nor is he liable to pay compensation for loss or injury arising out of delay in payment of a money order ,or out of any other irregularity in connection with a order.
