Mailed Item Return service

  1. Mailed postal articles may be returned to the sender without the consent of the addressee.
  2. During the course of sending by post, the articles shall not be returned except to the sender or to a person authorized by him in writing.
  3. For this, the consent of
    • Minister of Posts
    • Postmaster General
    • An officer authorized by the Postmaster General is mandatory.
    ( Here, the term Postmaster General includes the Deputy Postmaster General. The authorized officer of the Postmaster General is the Regional Postal Superintendent and the Postal Superintendent.)
  4. An application for the retrieval of any article shall be submitted directly to the above officer only by the sender or a person authorized by him in writing. Otherwise, it may be sent through the Post Master of the post office.
  5. Every application shall be accompanied by a document stating the reasons for requesting the return of the article. This document shall be enclosed in a sealed envelope and shall be opened only by the officers authorized by the above.
  6. If the reasons given in relation to postal articles are sufficient and it is satisfied that the applicant has sent the article, an order for return shall be made by the relevant authorities. Otherwise, the article shall be sent immediately to its address.
  7. The application shall be accompanied by a fee for this purpose in the form of stamps. This fee shall be Rs. 50/-.
  8. The fee for the return of foreign postal articles shall be accompanied by a fee for the return of foreign postal articles.
    • The total of the postage and registration fee for the relevant country and the withdrawal fee from the post office is Rs. 130/-.
    • Rs. 50/- is sufficient only if the foreign postal items are still in the country.
    These rules shall also be followed for change of address
